Livestock Guardian Dogs
Hazel is a Great Pyrenees x Akbash dog mix, and came to us at the age of 6 months. She was born on a very large goat farm in Texas, and learned how to be a guardian puppy from her mother, and by growing up with livestock. Since coming to our farm, Hazel has spent countless nights chasing off coyotes and other predators, such as Raccoons, and loose dogs. She also rids the farm of deer, snakes, squirrels, moles, and chipmunks. Hazel is our first LGD and we were amazed that we had no training to do in order for her to do her work. She is amazing! There are times when the gate is left open, and Hazel sits in the open spot, keeping the sheep inside the pasture. She has also chased the sheep to the other side of the barn, then ran back to the opposite side to chase something away. She loves seeing new lambs, and though she had to be taught that chickens don't do well when she plays with them, she really has been an excellent addition to the security force at the farm.
